CXMT Reportedly Ships HBM3E Samples and Plans Limited Production Within Two Months

CXMT has delivered HBM3E samples to several domestic AI chip design firms and expects to begin limited production within two months, according to a Reuters report published on 28 October citing two people familiar with the matter. The company’s HBM3E yield is reported at around 20% to 30%, against approximately 70% at SK hynix.

Reuters reported that CXMT supplied customers with two versions of the product: a standard design and a revised version with design changes intended to improve yield. In customer testing, the company’s HBM3E performed closer to SK hynix’s previous-generation HBM3 than to its HBM3E, the report said. Low yields mean more chips are scrapped or reworked, which is expected to make the product more expensive to produce than comparable overseas parts.

The report said CXMT began developing HBM technology in-house in 2024. It follows an August 31 report from The Information, cited by TrendForce, that Alibaba’s chip-design unit T-Head and Cambricon were testing CXMT’s HBM3E with their own processors, with products reaching the market as early as 2027 if trials progressed.

The backdrop is constrained access to advanced memory in China following tighter United States export controls on certain HBM products in December 2024. Reuters reported in September that Huawei, Cambricon, MetaX and Iluvatar CoreX had raised AI chip prices by 20% to 50% as memory costs rose. CXMT did not respond to a request for comment, according to Reuters.
